There appears to be a flaw in the system.
I have been married for almost 4 years. I am just now getting around to thinking about changing my name. Its not that I have some fear of this whole thing not working out or I’m afraid of “losing my identity” or anything like that. I’m just really fucking lazy and the QUEEN of procrastination.
But I finally printed off the paperwork and got ready to send everything in to take care of this and as I’m reading over what I have to send them I’m a little startled. They want me to MAIL THEM MY DRIVER’S LICENSE? Are you SERIOUS? I’ve only got the one you know.
So here is what I’m proposing…I will mail the Social Security office my driver’s license, which, by the way, ALREADY has my married name on it because the guy at the DMV was apparently willing to “take my word for it” that I really was, in fact, married (and we’ve already seen how intelligent I think those DMV people are) if the Social Security office will be willing to accept responsibility for the two tickets and the wreck that I am GUARANFUCKINGTEED to have driving the 1.2 miles back from the post office to my house. Deal?
Yeah, I didn’t think so.
I guess I’m going to have to spend one of my precious non-working Mondays off standing in line at the Social Security office. At least it will provide me with some good stories, right?

Been there done that. They want original documents but you can not mail them your license. In Florida you get replacements through the mail and I tried to mail them an old one. I got back an “are you effing crazy” email from SS. Much easier to go down here. GL!

damn at first I thought you were talking about the tweaking around I’m doing on the site! lol!!
Dude. So would not mail them my DL. Wouldn’t do it here in FL and I’d def not do in GA. When I lived in MA they gave out DL’s like candy. I still have three different ones that if you didn’t run thur a computer system would be ‘valid’.

Been married almost 24 years and my wife has never changed her name. It’s you..stick with it. It’s who he married. Of course it drove my Mom nuts because she couldn’t figure out how to get us anything monogramed. That was a plus: nothing monogramed.

You’re tweaking? I didn’t even know! Whatcha doin’?

The bookmark name/url thingie….see I got it to change but now the title is up there in green. I’m trying to tell the CSS to do in in the red so it doesn’t show and then it has the name you want. But it’s not listening!!!

I moved to Indianapolis in May and keep forgetting to update my IDs with my new information. Maybe I’ll just hold off til I get married so that I can kill two birds with one stone.

Frema…I’ve heard/read more than one mention of this marriage…is there something you aren’t sharing???

I got married in 1999 and intended to hyphenate my name. Just never got around to it. When people ask why my last name’s different from my husband and kid (and they do ask), they generally don’t take my response of “laziness” seriously.

mondays used to be my only day off. that sucked. so glad i escaped the kitchens.

No, no secrets. It’s no secret to anyone at this point that I want to marry Luke and do it soon. Sigh. The minute after he proposes? I will run to my computer and tell all of you.
Also, the accident pictures on my blog–everyone was OK, both times. I blogged about each one, if you’re interested in checking out my archives. The Cavalier was totaled in February (soooo my fault); the Cobalt was wrecked in May (soooo not).

OMG…a kindred spirit…My license is the only thing that has my married name on it..lol….I still use my “maiden” name on tax returns, Social Security, etc…I am just too lazy to do all the printing and copying….ROFL….I love the blog…especially a fellow Gawja Gurl
Frema on 28 Oct 2005 at 4:32 pm #
One more thing: What does it mean when you place an asterick by a blog name? I have always wondered that!

That’s funny! I’d never do it.
I’m 32 and have the exact same picture (and personal information like height and weight…haha, not so accurate) that was issued to me with my first license over a decade ago. They just renew online and I don’t have to go in, so, of course, I never do. I guess the infamous IL license scandal benefited us because now they are trying to make life easier for good drivers.
Going to SS to change a name sounds like a nightmare, particularly when I have families come into the library and each and every member of the family has a different last name. Who cares these days? Plus, I have a male coworker who took his wife’s last name hyphenated with is own! Now there’s an idea!

I have been married FOUR times and never changed my SS card, because they made it such a hassle.
(Well, good thing since i got divorce 3 times and changed it back, ha-ha.) I DID change my name(s), right there at DMV, with my marriage license, though.
The only problem I’ve had is with tax returns. They returned them once and said my names didn’t match, so I just resigned everything with my maiden name so it matched my SS number. That’s it!

I am so with you on this one. I waited 5 years before I finally got everything changed over!
Zube Girl on 29 Oct 2005 at 7:51 am #
I’m on one and a half years and am still not finished changing my name. I just love the Zube too much to let it go entirely.
Sarcomical on 31 Oct 2005 at 6:04 am #
yeah, that is EXACTLY what would happen, too, so you’re smart.
btw, i don’t think i ever told you – you’re new design is pretty. awww…
Milt on 31 Oct 2005 at 6:11 am #
Now you’ve got me thinking. I’ve been married for 35 years. It’s definitely time I changed my name.
Zube Girl on 31 Oct 2005 at 10:07 am #
One more thing. When I went to change my name at the SS office, I opted for the office in the boonies about two and a half hours away instead of the SS office an hour and a half away in Denver.
I was in and out in five minutes later. A few weeks later, a friend of mine went to the one in Denver and waited for four hours. Can you go to one that’s a little further, but in an area that’s a little less populated? The extra hour drive was worth not waiting four hours at the closer office.

Changing your driver’s license is nothing, try changing your passport, French Visa, Russian Visa, Work ID, and then having to go stand in the downtown branch of the NYC DMV for 6 HOURS TWO DAYS IN A ROW because they didn’t believe Monk-Tharp was an actual last name since I didn’t have my fucking marriage certificate (I did however have my passport, my TN driver’s license, my SS card, my French Visa, my Russian Visa, my work ID my birth certificate, 2 credit cards, and a health insurance card,oh and my HUSBAND!!! WHO they gave a NY driver’s license to immediately.) There is a special place reserved in hell for all DMV employees.

My sympathies in advance. Just remember the following: Breathe in. Breathe out.

I HATE getting those name changes done. At one point, my SS card had an ex-husband’s name for years and then I remarried. By the time I changed that well……..let’s just say it’s time to go again! If they didn’t make it such a hassle to do, I might actually KNOW what my last name is now!
Peace………..
